About the Founder

Manan Law Office is founded and managed by Munafrizal Manan, S.H., S.Sos., LL.M., M.IP., M.Si., a licensed Lawyer who has been practising law in terms of both litigation and non-litigation. He has various educational, training, and experience backgrounds. Besides having Bachelor of Law (S.H.) degree, he also has Bachelor of Public Adminstration (S.Sos.). He also has postgraduate degrees in Political Science (M.Si.), International Politics (M.IP.) from Australia, and Law (LL.M.) from the Netherlands. He wrote a thesis on Indonesian constitutionalism using constitutional law and political science approaches at the University of Melbourne in Australia. He had been taught to be familiar with case law analysis while studying at Universiteit Utrecht in the Netherlands. Living in the two different legal system countries taught him how common law and civil law work. In conjunction with Lawyer profession, he is also a certified professions of Mediator, Legal Auditor (CLA), Syariah Arbitrator, Liquidator (CLI), and Legal Drafter.

His past different working experiences has contributed to enrich his insights and to escalate his skills. He was Lecturer for about fifteen years. He was Researcher Staff at the Indonesian Constitutional Court (2003-2005) and Member of Assistance Team for the Constitutional Court Judges Handling Election Disputes at the Constitutional Court (2004). He involved as Member of Working Group for the Consolidation of Indonesian Political and Government System at the Indonesian Presidential Advisory Council (2010).

Moreover, he was also involved in researches conducted by the Indonesian Judicial Commission on ‘the Problem of Indonesian Judges in the Context of Law, Court, and Society’, by Directorate General of Legislation at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights on ‘A Guide for Adjudicating Constitutional Review Case at the Constitutional Court by the Government’, and by the National Law Development Agency at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights on ‘the State Institutions Relationship in the Indonesian Constitution in Law Enforcement Sector’.

Additionally, he participated in Focus Group Discussion conducted by the Judicial Commission discussing on the selection method of the Supreme Court Judge candidates. He was trusted by the Judicial Commission to make the questions list of a certain law area in order to be tested for the Supreme Court Judge candidates (2016). Furthermore, he was asked by the Judicial Commission to compile the accepted decisions of the Constitutional Court from 2003 to 2015 into a book in order to be disseminated for all judges across Indonesia. Besides, he has actively involved in organizing the series of the Workshop of the Code of Ethic and Code of Conduct held collaborativley by JSLG, KY, and KAS for Indonesian judges from different district and high courts of some provinces in Indonesia.

He has prolificly been publishing his writing works in terms of books, national journals (e.g. Jurnal Konstitusi, Jurnal Legislasi Indonesia), international journals (Constitutional Review, Indonesia Law Review, Asian Journal of Comparative Law, Journal of Politics and Law, Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies), and articles of printed and electronic mass media (Kompas, The Jakarta Post, Koran Tempo, Media Indonesia, Republika, Seputar Indonesia, Suara Pembaruan, Sinar Harapan, hukumonline.com, etc.).

Also, he participated as Guest Lecture at Department of Indonesian Studies the University of Sydney, Australia, 18 May 2009. He was selected as Runners Up Winner of the Australia Indonesia Governance Research Partnership (AIGRP) Student and Alumny Essay Competition 2009. He has actively participated in many discussions, seminars, and conferences events in both Indonesia and overseas as speaker or participant. He has often been invited to be speaker for some education and training activities such as contract law, legal drafting, legal opinion legal, procedural law, and mediation. As a licensed Lawyer, he has been handling the cases in the rooms of the courts including the Constitutional Court.

He served as the Commissioner of the Indonesian National Commission on Human Rights from 2017 to 2022, who acted as the Mediation Commissioner and then the Deputy Chairman for Internal Matters. As the Mediation Commissioner, he mediated many cases relating to human rights issues such as land dispute, labour dispute, medical dispute, environmental dispute, and local border dispute, etc.. Some of mediated cases have been resolved through settlement agreements among the disputants.

The above mentioned backrounds have definitely formed him to be a well qualifed Lawyer who has a broad perspective in practising law.
